More than 1/3 of the growing urban population in developing countries lives in slum conditions with the associated problems of inadequate water, sanitation, and lack of social infrastructure include health and education. This plenary session raises awareness for, and establishes a dialog about, supporting vulnerable girls' health and educational needs in order to keep them in school and promote their empowerment. Expert speakers identify and analyze the current situation in urban and rural districts today and discuss new strategies to support vulnerable girl's health to promote their empowerment. The session was part of 18th International Congress on Womens Health Issues: Cities and Womens Health: Global Perspectives and given on April 10, 2010 at the University of Pennsylvania.
