@MsLogjam yes this movie is popular in Germany as most American movies in the 80's were the only exposure to Western influences prior to the Berlin Wall falling, a trend that continues today.

If anyone speaks English, I was curious to know if movies like this are especially popular in Germany, and if movies like this shape the ideas Germans have about Americans?

Definitiv einer DER Filme. Seit ich denken kann kenne ich diesen Film. Wie oft habe ich den Convoy mit Matchbox-Trucks nachgespielt? Ich weiß es nicht. Aber ich werde ihn irgendwann mit meinem Sohn schauen.
