We finally got a CD called "por el mundo" at
http://cdbaby.com/cd/virginialuque

Gran Jota was written by Tarrega in 1872. His teacher was the well known guitarist Julián Arcas Lacal who already wrote a Jota Aragonesa in early years. This one by Tarrega is a revived and rewritten Jota inspired in the one by his beloved teacher.

The piece contains a showy Lisztean introduction with new variations alternated with repetitive refrains. It incorporates virtually every element of a virtuosistic technique that a classical guitarist can make possible on the instrument.

In adition to that, originally it is a group dance piece that usually is performed as a virtuosistic finale with voice, most of the time male and female accompanied by bandurrias, guitars, dancers playing castanets and as well as the solo instrumental version, it involves is performed as a virtuosistic finale with voice, most of the time male and female accompanied tremendous demanding effort technically speaking.

To me, it's a lot of fun. Enjoy!

  • Virginia,

Gracias

  • Nice play Virginia and thx for giving a lot of info about Tarrega. Is that true that Tarrega played tremolo with rest stroke right hand method? YOu know i play by my self without nails . Thx with best Regards !

  • The traditional school for the right hand at that time was a very perpendicular position, besides the physical problem Tarrega had. That right hand can create a very serious problem of tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, because of the friction of the tendons turning the wrist in a permanent unnatural motion.

  • I tried to listen to this without comparing to Li Jie's, but it's really impossible. While Virginia plays with more Spanish flair and punch, what really sets this piece apart for me was the playfulness in the exploration of the different styles with the simple melodies.

Virginia's might work better as a dance and indeed has some very strong bits, particularly toward the end, but I find Li Jie's captures the youthful joy and sense of weightless bounce, like a rubber ball with a mind of its own.

  • @wingklow she can access if she wants, with the right gov monitoring, of course. As long as it for art's sake, without any politics involved, she can have some access to certain worlwide info

  • excellently.

  • I love this recording Virginia! You are awesome!!

  • Nice. Thank you. (TS)

  • @wingklow This is RECORDING, that means engineered music. Li Jie plays it live. That#s something different. BTW live performances of VL are not very impressive: pure sound now and then, mistakes etc.

  • I wish Li Jie could have access to YouTube to hear you play, but YouTube is blocked in China, where she lives and teaches.

  • Thunderous applause and a standing ovation.

  • Magnifico!!!!!
