This video is an update of Pull the Plug on Grandma that was recorded October 31 (Halloween) of 2009. This performance took place on December 13th, further down the road in this nation's healthcare story. The venue was The Yippie Museum Cafe, where I had produced a series of shows during the 2007-2008 season. The occasion was the third Water Not Weapons concert (see waternotweapons.org for details).
Please pardon the shaky camera, although introducing The Blair Witch Project into the healthcare debate does bring a sense of uncertain reality to the already scary issue. 47 million Americans are without health insurance and millions more have "coverage" subject to the whims of overpaid insurance companies and a certain senator from Connecticut. These companies and their elected friends continue to tell us rationing care can be a dangerous and terrible thing.
We know that . That system is called the status quo.
With Single Payer being ruled out by both major political parties, some form of single payer or public option is the best chance this nation has to join the rest of the civilized world in the critical issue of how to take care of its people.
During the month of August you probably heard of Sarah Palin's Death Panels and the town hall meetings where organized lies and ignorance were used to deceive and disrupt the process of our summer democracy. "Pulling the plug" on grandma? Pull-ease! Since then, a weakened bill passed in the House of Representatives was followed by an insurance industry driven Senate bill being passed. Now both houses get to decide what we will pay and what healthcare will look and feel like in this country.
This song is for Joe ("I can't believe they let me get away with this") Lieberman, Sarah Palin and the legion of the clueless.
It begins with a totally unrelated tribute to Bob Dylan and the power of capitalism.

Public Options go to go
Insurance companies tell me so
So dont be slow
Pull the plug on grandma now
Send thugs to meetings in my town
Spread lies and ignorance around
Back Obama down
Pull the plug on grandma now
It doesn't matter what is right or what is even fair
It doesn't matter single payers just like medicare
Or insurance company CEOs make millions every year
With money that's not spent on us
Unless its marketing their corporate fear
( a big dose is your medicine!)
So stall debate and be real loud and make sure that you bring a crowd
You can be proud. Pull the plug on grandma now!
Helping you first is not their aim
They never got rich saying yes to a claim
That's the gist of the game
Pull the plug on grandma
And when you are done if youre still pissed
Unplug Rachel Maddow and every journalist
When it gets hard to resist
Pull the plug on grandma
And if you get sick of me singing this song
Your coverage wont help you
So sing along
Because there's rights and there's wrong
Pull the plug on grandma
Rights and there's wrong, pull the plug on grandma
Rights and there's wrong, pull the plug on grandma now!
I agree with you, healthmusic. Single Payer was taken off the negotiating table before the debate began.
