University of Redlands Camp Good Times

The University of Redlands football team recently participated in a community service effort during their "May Term Break". The team volunteered their time from April 25th to April 28th, working on 60 acres if camp grounds for the Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times camp, benefiting over 1,700 children with cancer and their families every summer. The following sneak peak is only a glimpse of the hard work this group of men (and 2 cheerleaders) were able to accomplish.
Some of the tasks not seen in the video include:
- Clearing a 30 foot radius of pine cones and pine needles from the cabins to prevent fires.
- Creating a new irrigation system, while digging trenches to house PVC piping and sprinklers
- Gathering bark bits, and moving them to a recreation gym set
- Digging numerous trenches
- Moving boulders
- Cleaning the pool and removing the tarp
- Painting all the cabins, benches, and buildings
- Staining a 1 1/2 mile fence that surrounded the perimeter of the 60 acre camp grounds
- Re-digging fire holes for fire places to be set
- Clearing a man-made trail for horses
and a lot more
The grounds crew of three stated the amount of work the team accomplished would have taken them 2 years to finish.
We exceeded any expectations, and in fact finished the core assignments on the first day (except for the cement slab) leaving us duties the camp did not initially have us doing on the schedule.
The camp was a great bonding experience for all those who went. We made a difference and touched lives we may never see, but we know we helped out for a great cause.
