Notice how it sounds more like a triple than an in-line six. The revised firing order of the Twister puts three cylinders firing into one side of the exhaust plenum, and the other three firing into the other side. That separation makes for the sound of two, three cylinder motors instead of one 6 cylinder.

Sweet, would love to see the whole boat.

Really nice rig. I love fast Mercuries. I've got a direct reversing 1958 Mark 78A with 2 blade bronze prop on a 15 ft. Glaspar G3. a real time machine! thanks for the video. great stuff!!

Wow! Beautiful!

The block is a 1972. Hoewever, the cowling has red stickers under the blue. Mercury made a block/exhaust log replacement upgrade for racing during that time. The midsection is older, with bolts holding part of the exhaust water jacket. Later models had a one piece casting.

i just picked up the same boat about 3 days ago... what are u running with the 150?
craigmak373 3 years ago
It's not a 150. It's about a 175 HP Mercury Twister-1. Running a Super Speedmaster with 9 X 15 Mercury SS 3-blade round ear surfacing prop. Slight cup.

Nothing better than the Tower of Power...very nice vids, and a very interesting exhaust note. I'm not familar with a "twister", and is that a custom exhaust manifold on the back of the cowl or was that part of the twister package? Keep an eye out for the Delta Queen!

Twister was a racing motor produced from 1970-1974. The exhaust manifold is stock, tuned, and exits at the lower midsection. The "Twister" with closed exhaust replaced the 1250 and '1350' open-exhaust "stackers". I hope to have a video of one by the end of 2008.
This particular lower unit is a Super Speedmaster 1:1 direct drive. no reverse or neutral. The prop is a surfacing 3-blade mercury SSM 9.25 x 15p.

Cool---- Trim It Out!!!!
DelCraft 4 years ago
There is no trim on a 1972 Mercury Twister. it is fixed height with a super speedmaster lower unit and surfacing prop. The bow rides high by design. I was taking it easy because my wife was in the boat. Also had rollers to contend with.
