the song is just so absurd, and dark, thats why.
The Decemberists/Colin Meloy are KNOWN for these sort of songs, with such terribly dark lyrics that you cant help but laugh...
lighten up.

Whoa, poor Colin having to listen to the audience snickering. This song gives me such chils, maybe it was just nervous laughter?

Yeah...this isn't the first time I've heard people laughing at this song. Let them laugh but I sure as hell didn't.

I really don't have any clue what anybody was laughing about....I don't think that there's anything ridiculous or funny about this song, in OR out of context of the album, I'm confused.
-
People laughed at the language he used in the song, for instance, "spilling out babies", "crinkled little fingers", "that girl Dawn". You know. They weren't laughing at the subject matter of the song.
"Why would they come to our concert just to boo us?"
-
Actually I think the main reason for the laughing is the phrasing when it comes to such horrible behavior.
"Her Womb started spilling out babies" for instance is a funny line, the reference to being cursed because your wife is actually having children, the character's reference to his children as burdens to be divested and so forth.
Individual elements within the song are actually quite hilarious while the whole can be as dark as it wants to be. It's usually referred to as gallows humor.

calm down and lighten up dude. it's supposed to be funny BECAUSE it's ridiculous. not everything the dude says is dead serious. he's basically laughing too.

Wow. Those of you that are disparaging those that laugh at this song need to get off your high horse. Yeah, this song might be atrocious if taken at face value, but it is an extremely ridiculous and absurd story. I suppose "A Modest Proposal" by Swift is no laughing matter either.

you guys making comments saying the people in the audience are "dumb" need to take a chill pill, and learn what the hell they are talking about. I happened to be in the audience at this show, and the vibe was a completely relaxed. Colin was making jokes about how the next song (this one). So yes, laughs were exactly what colin wanted from the crowd. Some people need to learn when to just shut their mouths.

people where laughing because either:
1-they don't know the story line within the album
or 2-they were immature
-
um its not meant to be ridiculous. It's about the narrator of the hazards of love album which, incase you didnt notice, is a rock opera. Probably the greatest ever written. The people who are laughing are just really dumb.
i think it's meant to be ridiculous
