Because autoland is more precise. Just looking at localizer and glideslope (ILS) on the PFD (Primary Flight Display), without seeing the runway, won't make the landing precise. Autopilot computers follow the localizer and glideslope much more accurately. And a pilot is paid to LAND the plane the safest way, which isn't always manual landing.

Ok to clear things up the ILS Will guide the pilot to the runway. The Autoland will flare the aircraft above the runway and allow it to land smoothly. (This feature is not available in Microsoft fs)

Hey mate, I am 13, living in australia and it is my dream to fly for Emirates. How can I get to fly for Emirates, do you like the job you have and what is it like living in Dubai?
Thanks :)

If the Autolanding is so accurate, why cant all the pilots land all the planes equipped with the autopilot landing feature..why would the pilots opt for a manual landing?..

actually i have the pmdg 747 and it has everything. fmc and autoland

Lindo de mais!

The ILS will line you up and take you down the glidescope, but it will not land for you unless the plane is equipped with an autoland feature like the md-11. I know in fsx, the airbus ILS almost lands you perfect though. Not the case in real life though. If you tried that, you might have a bad day. I always disengage the autopilot when I'm at Minimums. Then auto throttle before touch down.
Hi Gents,
Let me try and "explain" this approach. It is an Autoland approach in CAT I weather. The vis was reported at 800m in +SN and a ceiling at 300ft. After an S7 Russian A310 went off the runway the airport was closed for snow clearing. After 06h30 flight time and an hour hold I was getting a little tired. I elected for the autoland simply because it was the safest option on that day. CAT IIIB operation in EK is approved to 0Ft DH and 125m RVR (Runway visual range). Hope this helps ...

By the way in Emirates we don't make a difference in the operation of a CAT II or CAT III landing. We use the same procedures call "low visibility procedures". Only the weather will define the "minimums" used but the autopilot will land the aircraft ... not the pilot ...

After 50min holding due to Munich airport snow closed, we came to land after an A310 of "S7" slided off runway 08R. Although the landing is not in actual Cat II or III conditions I elected to go for an autoland and not take any risks. That's airline business ... safety comes first :-)
As DreamboyCAT noticed I disengaged the autopilot at around 70 kts then took the autobraking system off and slowly came off the runway at low speed. Hope this helps to understand the video better ...

Hi Gents !
When I filmed that video I requested the lights to be close to full brightness simply to avoid having spacial disorientation. One thing the video doesn't show well is the amount of snow falling at the time. Snow in the landing lights have a tendency to make you feel like you're in spiral to the left ... I will put the rest of the video up in a few days ... it shows how we were sliding left and right on the tarmac trying to find our way to the parking ....
