Meet Steve. This is Steve's story showcasing why scale out is the storage solution of the future and why Scale Computing is the best option.

Scale-out vs. Scale-up Storage: What's the Difference?

The processes of scaling out or scaling up storage systems both result in additional storage capacity. In that respect they address the same short-term need. In many other respects the approaches are very different and will affect the performance, management, and resiliency of your storage system.

Scale-up storage offers the ability to add more HDDs (hard disk drives) or other capabilities to a storage device until a limit is reached. At this point, the device is replaced with a more robust product and data is migrated from old to new. Forklift upgrades result in budget impacts during the initial investment, and again when the unit needs to be replaced.

Scale-up storage offers the ability to add more HDDs (hard disk
drives) or other capabilities to a storage device until a limit is reached.
At this point, the device is replaced with a more robust product and
data is migrated from old to new. Forklift upgrades result in budget
impacts during the initial investment, and again when the unit
needs to be replaced.
Alternately, if the existing product is still available for purchase, a
second identical storage device could be added to the environment
to lessen the financial impact of upgrading; however, this will create
a second storage pool that is isolated from the first. Managing multiple
storage pools diminishes all of the benefits of shared storage.
Ideally, new storage devices could be added without retiring the old
devices or creating multiple silos of storage. This defines the concept
of scaling out storage. Scale-out storage manages a single storage
pool across multiple devices and can expand the pool across new devices.
This basic definition of scale-out storage doesn't tell the full story.
Not all scale-out architecture is created equal. Storage from Scale
Computing goes beyond the ability to create a multi-device storage
pool and provides a highly available scale-out architecture designed
to enhance performance as it grows.
