Damien Lawson, Friends of the Earth Australia national Climate Justice co-ordinator called for a campaign of civil disobedience if politicians continue to do very little on reducing carbon emissions and continue giving preferential treatment to the Coal Industry and substantial subsidisation of energy intensive industries at the expense of investment in renewable and solar energy and the creation of green jobs.
Inside the Melbourne Town Hall the Australian Labor Party State Conference was taking place, with Premier John Brumby committing Victoria to building another dirty coal fired power station and an energy intensive Desalination Plant at Wonthaggi rather than invest in tertiary water treatment, water recycling and storm water recovery and renewable power options and green jobs.
The thousands of people attending sat down in protest, reminiscent of the sitdown protests of the Vietnam anti-war movement in the 1970s, at the lack of effective action from both State and Federal Politicians from the Liberal and Labor parties.
