Nurses demonstrate the mechanism of an iron lung (artificial respirator). The nurses place the patient in the machine, feed her, perform hygiene, take vital signs, and give an enema. They demonstrate emergency procedures if there is an electrical failure or mechanical faults in the machinery.

  • This is sad :(

  • @alekey15 Perhaps, but this machine saved many lives. People felt comfort to be inside it because they could breathe. Most recovered and were eventually able to leave the cabinet, although many retained various degrees of loss of function.

  • This is a Both Cabinet Respirator (iron lung) from South Australia. Edward Both was a prolific inventor who produced this and other medical inventions. An American, Phillip Drinker, invented the first iron lung, but the Both was cheaper to manufacture. During the summer of 1937-38, such was the demand for the iron lung, that within an hour of each one being completed it was being used by a patient.
