I feel your pain! I just spent 2 hours fighting with the branch manager of my bank on the very same problem.
My advice is to set up a meeting with your banks Branch Manager and have him / her explain to you the actual terms of your checking account agreement.
Stay no less then one hour.
See them get more fustrasted then you are with the charges they've slapped on you.
This will make you feel a little better guarenteed:o)

Hear, hear! I'm so tired of people claiming that I've CHOSEN to spend when my account's in the negative! Why would I choose to have hundreds of dollars in fees, when instead I could just wait till I've got the money?!
We're human, we err. But when my online AND phone statements, AND personal ledger, don't match the bank's balance which I don't get to see, how is this my error?!
