How to swing

I am trying another type of tutorial format.  Let me know what you think of it.  This was very stream of consciousness. I didnt try to reorder or edit this video very much, and I may ramble a bit. Basically, I am trying to convey several things:

a description of the various attributes of swing
how it contrasts with other forms of music,
a process for learning how to vocalize swing timing.
a process for transferring vocalized swing to the keyboard.

This basically involves learning the syllables to vocalize swing by singing the score:

out of time
tapping, snapping or clapping on the two and the four
to a metronome clicking on the two and four
singing along with the recording and copying the rhythmic flow as precisely as possible
finally playing while vocalizing the tune.

This is the way to get the timing of great jazz players into your system. The bottom line is this : You get it in your voice first. Then and only then, you let your fingers follow your voice.

There is a free download link of the tunes I used on my website at

  • Wife thought I had gone crazy when she heard me "dee dubbing" but it works! Cheers 7nm

  • @FredKpiano Ha. Glad it helped. It probably should have used a slower tune as an example.

  • Voice leads, fingers follow...seems like a simple concept but it really helps to hear it spelled out like that. Man, how bad to I want to shed Anthropology right now? haha, very nice work in these tutorials 7NM.

  • Thanks, BLM.

  • Whats the intro Song?

  • 1:04 I thought you said "Bastard !"

  • A good way of looking at it is that you're playing off the dominate snare hits if you have drums playing. You're basically "skat'n" on the keys. I like this, may have to try this myself.

  • I'm just getting into Clifford Brown now so hearing Daahoud right from the gate was just awesome, and in both hands lol...If I could indulge you for a request, it would be for you play Daahoud in a video. Your covers and improvs are always so raw.

  • Bingo. You got it.

  • The Real Book, Vol I

It's a great book, but not always accurate.
