They celebrate the sunny May London weekend when a Sultan riding a giant
elephant met a little girl in the middle of the city. The Sultan's elephant was magical, whether down on its knees and sleeping outside (the hip, grand, gorgeous eatery) The Wolseley on Piccadilly or wandering through London so suddenly its trunk would appear around the corner of a city block. A magnificent mechanical beast, it was taller than Admiralty Arch with huge flapping ears made from 900 sq feet of leather and a huge wooden body. The little girl, who we first found snoozing on a deckchair in the sun of St James Park, stood 18 feet tall. The spectacle made even cynical Londoners joyful.
The elephant will roam Antwerp 6-9 July, Calais in September and Le Havre in October. It was created by the French theatre company, Royal de Luxe.
