Community Beacons realizes the power of spontaneous performance. The drums are a visual, social and scientific exploration of alternative power generation and personal expression. These user powered instruments convert sound vibrations to light using sensitive speakers and ultra bright LEDs, relating to this year's theme of "Currents." When the drum is played, electrical current is generated in the speaker coil and converted to light energy by the LED. Performers are able to instantly convert their own energy and enthusiasm into currents of light. Community Beacons promotes spontaneous communication and expression over distance, uniting and enlivening the community with light rhythms.
