In February 2009, the state of Missouri rescinded funding for public television and radio. This cut in state funding, combined with a drop in member and underwriting support due to the economic climate, has resulted in an unparalleled shortfall in KETC/Channel 9s operating budget for the remainder of the fiscal year. Channel 9 is addressing the funding shortfall with immediate budget cuts that include reductions in expenses, staff and salaries. Unfortunately, these reductions will not be sufficient to make up the shortfall. It will be necessary for Channel 9 to raise additional funds over the next four months to address the unexpected loss in state support. The budget cuts were announced this week by KETC President and CEO Jack Galmiche. In order to maintain the programs and services that are so critical to our region, Channel 9 is launching an immediate appeal to the community for additional support. Although KETC is the most watched public television station in America and is nationally recognized for its service to the community, only a small percentage of its viewers provide financial support. Those interested in donating can call 314-512-9192 or visit www.ketc.org Locally owned and operated, Channel 9 is a nonprofit organization that receives 90 percent of its funding from the people of the St. Louis region. Only 10 percent of Channel 9s operating budget comes from government support. In addition to member and underwriting support, Channel 9 develops funding through grants and generates revenue through its production and broadcast facilities.
