Goku becoming super saiyan made it into my Top Ten Most Shocking Dragon Ball Moments video =) In retrospect I probably should have put Vegeta and Bulma getting together on that too.

uh no he didn't, that's just something he added in as a twist to the story. He wasn't repeating the legend bit-by-bit. He made it up as he went along.

The Oozaru was because of the fucking monkey king legend that Dragon Ball was based on! It wasn't part of the Saiyans back when Toriyama had that happen the first time!

No, he didn't have it all planned out from the beginning. No one ever does. He's even stated that he's forgotten things before. He did not think up the Saiyans when he thought up Goku. In the concept art, Goku's basically a monkey with clothes on. He didn't have things thought up back then other than the initial premise and it's obvious that he just kept making stuff up as it went along. He was just good at incorporating new things into the background plot of the series.
