  • You see whats in its place now, great shame. The Buildings they ahve put up for the 2012 olympics look so bad, rather have the Royal Navy there.

  • A good archive record, all now fading into history.

*Osprey and more is covered in the new book "Dorset, The Royal Navy". Out now, Dovecote Press.*

  • Used to be lovely view from the wardroom, and that funny little annexe just below. Many hours goofing out on the duck. All gone now..Sigh. Still got my Osprey tie though.

  • Worked there as a civvie up to the closure and for six years after in one of the "businesses" that opened in the dockyard. Saw all the decline of Osprey and the air base as it happened. Sad then and sadder still now.

  • Served in the eighties, fire station and flight deck training unit, great memories.

I remember the NAFFI club, think it was called the flying fish club, also week end run ashore in Weymouth.

Excellent sports facilities and lunch time circuits., a shame to see how it has ended up.

  • Gods Wonderful Island ruined by westminster Portland is now dieing let alone what was the finest 24/7 navy base on the south coast !! Navy were stupid !!!

  • i loved it was there 1979 -1980 l lived inapproved lodgings in carlton road North

  • Was a great place to serve, I loved it. Seems a shame to have lost a great facility, surly could have been used by HMG for something else?

  • So sad, I was on Portland as a matelot and as a civy, great place.

  • Whats this beautiful music ? with this sad slideshow. I love Portland, its my one true love.
