On Saturday April 17, 2010, a new statue was revealed to the public at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Among the hustle and bustle of Western Heritage Awards preparations and board meetings, a statue honoring the values of the American West was unveiled on the east end of the parking lot. The statue, The Code of the West, was designed by artist and sculptor Herb Mignery. The concept was derived from the values of the Code of the West Foundation founded by Michael Kammerer, Jr.: A firm believer in the values of the peoples of the early American West, Kammerer founded the Code of the West Foundation, a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the common sense values of working for what you get, helping neighbors, taking care of family, and having your handshake and word be your bond. (R. Michael Kammerer Jr. Obituary, The Aspen Times, May 23, 2007)

Museum President Chuck Schroeder along with cowboy poet and songwriter Red Steagall and Kristen Wolf, daughter of Kammerer, welcomed the audience, discussed the significance, and shared a few stories pertaining to the statue. Former Museum Curator of Art Ed Muno did the honors of unveiling the statue. Plans to prepare a landscaped base for the statue are underway as of April 2010.

Video was recorded and edited by Archivist Laura Anne Heller for the Dickinson Research Center. Those interested in viewing the full ceremony (20 minutes) on DVD at the Dickinson Research Center may do so by calling and making an appointment.
