A one-day conference co-sponsored by the Konrad Adenhauer Stiftung and Zayed University's College of Communication and Media Science
Traditionally, the media plays an integral part in shaping public opinions as well as decision making processes. This role bares a strong responsibility on the side of the media to report as objective and truthful as possible.
Reporters are expected to be as accurate as possible given the time allotted to story preparation and the space available, and to seek reliable sources. The media is at all times accountable to the public.
The conference comes at a time where many changes are taking place in the Arab world. And the media undoubtedly plays an important role during these changes. But reporting in these times of change also poses a greater challenge to journalists. They are confronted with manipulation attempts from all sides of the political spectrum, censorship and the difficulty to find trustworthy and willing sources.
To what extend can the media still fulfill its role under these difficult circumstances is the question the conference aims to explore.
