--

The next speaker [Majority Leader Steny Hoyer] was quoted a couple years ago, as saying about the Republican budget, when we had a deficit of $248 billion: This constitutes nothing less than fiscal child abuse because they will morally force our children and grandchildren to pay our bills.

I couldnt have said it better myself, Madam Chair. That is exactly whats happening, but the budget deficit isnt $248 billion. Its $1.8 trillion. We dont even get close to $248 billion under these budgets.

Yes, we have a tough fiscal situation. We have inherited it, you could say. The question is: What are we doing about it? Are we making it better or are we making it worse?

The Presidents budget, which is here on the floor, makes it so much worse:
- Doubles the debt in five-and-a-half years; triples it in ten;
- Massive tax increases in the middle of a recession - on everyone;
- Chases ever-higher spending with ever-higher taxes, forever.

We have different ideas. We have differences. Nowhere else is it more clear about the differences between our two parties than it is today.

The gentleman has spent the last 20 minutes criticizing us for cutting spending: guilty as charged. Yes! We need to cut spending! Wow! I said it Holy Cow in Washington a novel idea.

You know what? We spend too much money in this government. Weve got to prioritize spending. The American people guess what this is their money. We dont just make it up. (well actually theyre printing a lot of it down at the Federal Reserve now more than they should).

This comes from the American people. It is their money. You keep taking it away from them, you know happens at the end of the day, Madam Chair, they dont have as much freedom.

They dont have the ability to put groceries on the table. They dont have the ability to pay their mortgage, which might be underwater.

The engine of this economy of this country is not its government, its its people.

And we believe that we need to get serious about our fiscal situation. Dont raise taxes in a recession. Dont borrow and spend your way to prosperity it never worked in any other country, why would it work here?

Lets get our fiscal house in order. Lets get our deficit down. Lets get our borrowing down. Lets get our taxes down. Lets get more jobs and more freedom in this economy

Thats exactly what our budget does. Its responsible. Its serious. It gives me the ability to go home tomorrow and look my three kids in the eyes, when I hug them, and kiss them, and tell them: I just made right by you because I just went to work to make your future better.

Im going to go home with a clear conscience. I hope you can do the same.

  • Ryan for President!

  • I agree, he really sees the economic realities which sadly so many others dont.

    Its like they just dont get it, economic reality and good judgements rules the roost folks, not political might and popularity lip service.

  • Congressman Ryan if you want to help small business as you say then pass the presidents jobs bill and stop playing games. Thanks.

  • HOLY COW - Paul Ryan!!!

  • I found this by searching for " whats this cow im chasing". Lol=D

  • too bad we dont have a congress full of people just like him

  • This person doesn't understand the issues that we are facing. I feel, he does not understand, what social reform is needed. I feel he speaks; as if he understands and cares. but they are only hollow words. I feel ashamed that I share a surname with this person. I have many theories and solutions to our problems. we must get away from supply-side economics.

  • Flat Tax so we all can feel the pain....

  • P: Ron Paul and VP: Paul Ryan 2012

  • Not only cut spending but reform taxation. With all of that "I propose" being carelessly thrown around tonight, Obama should have proposed a flat tax. The rich would have more money to spend from this and so they would invest in companies and spend their extra money on commodities. The middle class would take the money spent by the upper class and then use it to employ the lower class. Everybody wins, everybody has a job, and everybody is making money. That is what should happen.
