Exclusive! Surprise, surprise... Check out Sinclair Research latest innovation, the X-1 electric vehicle! Available July 2011. Presented in 2010, 25 years after the C5. http://www.sinclair-research.co.uk
Now they're saying 2012? I think this is vapor. They announced in 2010 that it would ship by July 2011 (which their website still shows) and they couldn't even make that date. Probably didn't get enough reservations to start production.
@KaitainCPS Yes I think he's aware of that, but feels he has to try anyway.
See his interview on the Click programe (also on YT) where he talks about other electric cars. They are much bigger and the Lithium batteries are very expensive.
I saw a newspaper report in the Times saying that, such was the cost in emissions of creating the new cars (mainly the batteries) that you'd need to run the electric car for 80,000 miles before you'd see savings in CO2 emissions!
I think the two issues are interrelated. The lights and mirrors on the motorbike are much more important when you're out in heavy (and dangerous) traffic. The X-1 seems ill-equipped as a fully-fledged road vehicle, but I think it would be pretty safe in a specialized cycle lane or cycle path. Even so, I'll agree that the mirrors would be beneficial in all circumstances.
@KaitainCPS I agree to some extent, but I think many of the design problems could have been overcome by looking at motorcycle design, and ensuring that the X-1 has at least the minimum safety features one would find there. The problem with Sinclair's products is that he seems to design in isolation, focussing on narrow technical goals such as economy and fuel efficiency without thnking about the practical needs of the rider.
I think the problem with all these types of vehicles (C5, Segway etc.) is that they really need the simultaneous creation of new infrastructure, most obviously a widespread network of practical cycle paths in most cities. (Even better, covered paths and/or underground cycle tunnels.) Not easy.

It should sell better now, because consumers know more about electric veichles now.
