  • Monk was the first musician to take Duke Ellington seriously as a pianist. And his harmonies here are really just an (extreme) extension of what Ellington was doing. The critics who called Monk a revolutionary really did not understand that he was constructing, little by little, his own complete jazz history in nearly every composition.
