Annie St Geme, Corona del Mar High School, Newport Beach, California running the Girls Mile at the 2006 Arcadia Invitational. Alex Kosinski, Oak Ridge High School, CA., is right behind her followed by Shannon Murakami from Saugus High School, also Ca. and Anna Sperry (maroon) from Semi Valley High School, CA.
Annie (now Anne, they grow up so fast!) went on to Stanford where mom & dad were both outstanding athletes, Alex came back and won this race the next year, going on to the University of Oregon, and Shannon is at UCLA. Anna Sperry went to BYU for two years and transferred to Arizona State, now running for Coach Quintana.
Anne finished her senior year ranked #2 in the country right behind Danielle Tauro in the mile. She also became the 2nd fastest 1600 meter runner (4:39.94) all-time in Orange County, behind her aunt Polly (Plummer) St Geme (4:33.65), and surpassed Mary Decker's 1973 time of 4:40.4.
Jordan Hasay, Alex Kosinski and Christine Babcock would continue, in 2007 and 2008, to destroy records in the mile/1500/1600 at the national level. California is a pretty tough neighborhood to be a miler in these days!
The man who directed this Arcadia Invitational and who's name is on the title page of this video, Doug Speck, died this month of cancer. He has been involved with young people in this sport, many going all the way to the Olympics, for more years than you or I want to count. Now every year I go to the Arcadia meet I'll think of him.
