The UK MoD is planning to buy around 600 vehicles under the first part of the FRES Specialist Vehicles programme, known as "Recce Block 1".

Nearly half of these are the Scout variant and the rest are repair, recovery and protected mobility variants.

All will use the same chassis, referred to as a "common base platform." A scout vehicle needs very high protection levels on the modern battlefield. BAE Systems' combat-proven CV90 has made improvements in this area (and many others) with each of its six customers.

This evolutionary approach to meet changing threats means it is now the best-protected vehicle in its class, including mine protection comparable with a main battle tank - and yet it can be carried by an A400M.

The FRES Scout variant builds on this pedigree and features a shorter and lower profile chassis plus an electronic architecture, or operating system, specifically developed to meet the needs of the British Army. CV90's unusually low thermal and noise signatures and ability to perform long periods of silent watch suit it well for the Scout role.

A demonstrator vehicle began mobility and firing trials in September 2009.

However, General Dynamics UK team was awarded the contract to deliver Specialist Vehicle for British Army on 22 Mar 2010.

  • @crazydogfight umm no it isnt, it owns a swedish defence company, but its british. its a company based in london, created by the merging of british defence companies. it is certainly NOT swedish.

  • @Sonnypjim09

How exactly it's superior to french or german ones ?

I'd say that superiority of British Armed Forces comes from uninterrupted tradition of training, up to date combat experience

  • Lol BAE is now swedish ,,,,

  • @TheRebelEye Just Google it. BAE Is a merger of British defence companies, headquartered in London and with defence contracts all over the world - mainly Britain, Australia and the US.

  • @Elitepoosniff The CV90 was made by Swedish Hägglunds, now owned by BAE. The best part about the CV90 is that it's Scandinavian.

  • @Spjungen Are you completely ignorant to British army equipment? Especially compared to other European armies.

At the moment, the British army is the second best equipped army in Europe down to the individual man/woman.

Please, do not listen to media reports about troops kit, go see for yourself at military shows. Read about it or join (If you was from here)

  • Nice bit of kit..looks like a mini challenger 2

  • @Elitepoosniff Yea OK sure. It's a wee bit hard to believe it coming from you but OK. I'd rather not argue it.

  • @TheRebelEye Its HQ, main base of operations to the world is in England, there are bases where bits are made all over the world, but its a British Defence company based in England.

  • @Elitepoosniff Well it seems at least one of us took to this respectfully. I'm not saying that it's completely from Ohio. I'm just saying that there is one in Ohio. And personally I don't think it's completely from England either.
