Yes. There's much more happening underneath the surface during training then you seem to think. But for the record, this movie was depicting a different era of American military basic training. Drill Sergeants cannot physically abuse a trainee anymore. They can still do all the yelling, push ups, etc. Just not physical abuse, not that it was horrible abuse to begin with.
