This clip is an average start-up from UK Gold 2, between 6pm and 2am they used to repeat the daytime UK Gold schedule in the evening. The channel launched as UK Gold Classics in October 1998, then UK Gold 2, then UK G2 in November 2003, then UKTV G2 in March 2004 and finally Dave in October 2007, how the channel has come a long way since then.

  • Thanks for an excellent trip down memory lane. This reminds me of when we first got Sky Digital(around the same time).

  • Well I taped this the day after we had NTL Digital installed, so I was quite impressed with what they had to offer. No match for Sky at that time though.

  • Was that a testcard at the beginning or a promo?

  • It was an off air caption, although it only appeared from 5pm onwards on UK Gold 2 on NTL Digital Plus.

  • ahhhh happy memories i remember these being used. scary to think its 11 years ago though...

  • Starbug :D Why did it appear then? Had they just finished showing Red Dwarf and faded into an ident or something?

  • @steviegTVreturns UK Gold 2 seemed to take UK Gold's previous set of idents whenever UK Gold got new idents, until the 2002 lifestyle idents which both channels used.

  • I just wish, to this very day, that the continuity announcers would slip up once in a while and say, 'Now on BBC1' when they are voicing, say, Yesterday, or Dave.

After all, they are the same teams voicing them. AND the same companies running them. Give or take a bit of Virgin!

  • I watched UK Gold 2 a fair bit around this time, and remember the start-ups like the one shown here well. I also loved the idents that were used at this time, particularly the apples one, and would feel very tingly when it would come on the TV.

  • and thats when UKTV went down the pan, changing all the channels to pathetic names like Watch, G.O.L.D, Dave, Home and whatever else is out there today :(

  • It did after UK Gold changed their idents. UK Gold 2 took it over, before going off air.

  • There was never a UK Gold Classics channel.
