This is a continued description of the cajon setup I use for gigs. The kit is expanded to include a hand cymbal, a kick tom, a dhumbek, a soprano hand snare, a mini hi hat, a ching ring, a cowbell, a wood block, a zil pedal, a cup holder, a pandeiro, and an udu. This setup is parsed down depending on the nature of the gig, but on occasion it is set up in full regalia for jam sessions. I am particularly quite proud to have come up with a zil pedal and the cajon kick pedal on my own.

I employ parts of this setup with current groups such as Garnada (SF), Crash Boom Bang (SJ), Koko de la Isla Flamenco (Palo Alto), Hassa! Flamenco (Woodside), and Hootenanny! (Willow Glen). Cheers, and hope to see you at my next gig! Happy drumming!

  • Hey, i've watched all your stuff, and I think you give good reviews. I don't want this to be a "personal" question, but do you make a decent amount of Cash from being a local bass player/percussionist. Because i'm a teen that wants to be a musician.

  • @Dugger1997 : I make a fair amount of money, but since the gigs are sporadic, it is hardly considered steady income. I work as a part-time physics professor at a local college, which brings in more moey, but I still need to find additional income--particularly over summer months. If you do want to be a gigging musician, learn to read standard notation and chord charts. It will get you more gigs.

  • @MikeMMasuda Also, work on your ensemble chops--learn to listen to the band and don't overplay. It will also help if you can sing and work out harmonies and play at the same time. Also--NETWORK! Connect with other musicians as much as possible, even if they are out of your comfort zone. They will know others. Good luck!

  • Looks like a great setup. How do you use cymbals in conjunction with the cajon? I've been wanting to use a ride cymbal. How do i transition between holding a stick in my right hand for cymbal parts, back to full two hand cajon parts?

  • @MikeMMasuda Cool, thanks for the info man!

  • AMAZING!!! I'll really like to see some bulerias or solea por buelrias coming out of that!!
