How did you sync the lights using midi?

The equipment used is a Z-tronics MIDI Interface and Relay Driver. The Relay Driver will handle up to 96 different "channels" of light or motor circuits. It is possible to increase this to many hundreds of circuits.
It is necessary to program the MIDI file with individual On/Off messages for each relay channel, all done with MIDI editing software such as Cakewalk.
The Relay On/Off messages are superimposed on MIDI channels along with the Note On/Off messages for the music.

Yes, the display has been moved permanently as of this year. It was scheduled to open November 28 and will run until December 28.
The display has been expanded and includes a "living lights" tree inside, played from the Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ.
