This VISSIM animation shows three different concepts for a roundabout at the SR 140 (Houze Road) and Hembree Road intersection in Roswell, GA. The first concept which was developed by Roswell staff includes a second eastbound through lane along Hembree Road that begins and ends within 250 feet of the roundabout and a separate southbound left turn lane. The second eastbound through lane is designed to add more capacity for this movement in the roundabout. As the animation shows, the second eastbound lane is hardly used due to queuing in the main eastbound through lane. Gresham, Smith and Partners modeled the roundabout as a true single lane roundabout with right turn by-pass lanes. The capacity on the smaller roundabout is about 15 to 20 percent less than the original Roswell concept. A third alternative was modeled which adds metering signals to several approaches to the intersection. These metering signals allow for better flow through the roundabout and adds about 10 percent more capacity than the second alternative.
