  • Hughie Gallacher is my grandfather. Me and my da Hughie Jnr still live in Newcastle

  • My grandad told me about this game. Hughie Gallagher was the Newcastle centre forward and captain who led them to their last championship in 1927. He reckoned he was the best player he ever saw. Gallagher was the first of a long line of great Newcastle centre forwards. He was later sold to Chelsea. His return game with them at St. James is I think still the record attendance of all time at that ground. In my grandads time the England v Scotland game was the most anticipated game of the year.

  • @legandrydirk Won it , most of the foreign teams then hardly knew how many players to put on the field

  • @spiff74. My grandads name was John, Jimmys brother, my dads name is also John, still alive and well and still living in Denny, I live in Wigan,Lancs, moved here to play for Wigan Athletic in the early 80s, must be football in the family, hope this helps, David McMullan

  • In Ireland, we were, in the south, more or less forbidden to play soccer by society, until the 1970's. Had we not had 'gaelic games' foisted on us, I'd like to think we'd have had a lineage like Scotlands. I also wish this side could've entered WC 1930. But above all, I cringe that John White, Baxter, McKay, Law, Alex Young, Crerand, McLintock etc and the Leeds / Celtic / Rangers lads weren't moulded into world beaters from the early to late 1960's. A criminal waste of talents.

  • Wow wish I'd been there. Scotland gave them a public spanking.

  • @neilb229 I have often wondered what the Lisbon lions would have done,if they took the field as a Scotland team. And I am a Rangers fan.Shameful really that they never. You would have thought that would have been a no brainer after them winning in 67.

  • @legandrydirk It's interesting to speculate. It's a shame the SFA weren't far sighted enough to go. They were certainly invited. The only game that was taken seriously though was the annual England match. To keen to beat the English when we could of had a couple of World cups under our belts!

  • @ZXRoux I have often wondered what this team would have done,if we had entered the first world cup.

  • Hughie Gallacher, Tommy Law and Alex Jackson: Chelsea Legends =3
