I put a smallish cam (.5 or .75 max cam) into a (bad) downward flaring placement and took onto it. The cam blew and the rope hooked my leg. The next piece was a good nut that held. The climb is Pope's Crack in Joshua Tree.

  • I was wondering a fast way to retrieve all your gear

  • @pg78ify You know nothing gumby. How dare you tell people not to wear helmets. Don't spread your nonsense here. Some people here have had some serious experiences or know people who have. Let's not prize ignorance so highly. Wear a helmet or don't expect people to listen to you bitch about your wheelchair. That's all.

  • @pg78ify Eight bolts failed? No. Freakin, Way! That never happened.

  • I think that you flipped upside down because you were "taking" on that cam. It blew as you were weighting it and leaning back in your harness. A standard fall like a slipped hand or foot probably wouldn't have flipped you since the rope wouldn't have hooked your ankle either.

And oh yeah, wear a helmet.

  • I am sorry, maybe it didn't matter in this video, but a helmet is ALWAYS a good idea! If you smack the back of your head against the rock hard enough you're dead, simple as that. Bad rope awareness, belayer not paying enough attention, glad you are ok man, I bet you won't make that mistake again.

  • @argatronics was going to comment but u have said it all

  • @wcleary91

8 bolts isn't BS if the climber weighed perhaps as much as an elephant.

  • @pg78ify I cant seem to find any accident report from 2004 in the Gunks that says a falling climber pulled EIGHT bolts out. I think I would be very curious to hear about the wall/route that this happened on.

  • @wcleary91 Hey, sorry for the delay with my reply. The accident I'm talking about took place in 2004 in the Gunks, the guy who was injured was a friend of mine from Boston. Wearing a helmet doesn't significantly contribute to your safety, the injuries it might help to save you from are not life threatening, and if things go wrong, no helmet is gonna save you, sorry. It gives you a false sense of safety and thus boosts your confidence -- sometimes it's good, sometimes it isn't.
