@intelegentable There really was no competition, the singers were so different. The rivalry was simply created by the press. Calles was able to sing all that Tebaldi could sing and Tebaldi simply could not sing Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini etc live, remember wisely enough she did not record the cabaletta and it would have been laboured and clumsy. Tebaldi was too great an artist to make a fool of herself. Tebaldi was great Callas was great and many more were equally great.

Tebaldi had one of the most lovely voices this side of heaven. It is interesting to hear her sing this music so closely assosciated w ith Callas, I have always wondered what Tebaldi could do with the long sustained phrases of Bellini. It is a lovely rendition and gives us an idea of how seriously Tebaldi could have competed with Callas had she chosen to.Callas had more agility and passion but Renata had sheer vocal gold to commend her.
