The oath or affirmation to the Queen is taken by the Lord Speaker (Baroness Hayman), the Archbishop of Canterbury (Rowan Williams), the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Lord Strathclyde), Lord McNally, Baroness Royall of Blaisdon and Baroness D'Souza.

Before taking their seats in Parliament, the Lords must make an affirmation or oath of Allegiance:
"I do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors, according to law."

"I do swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God."

  • Why do some swear and some declare?

  • @ShaiSchiller1

Some people object to swearing by God, so they make a 'solemn affirmation'.
