This video is to support passage of the proposed membership amendment that will be considered in every annual conference this year. Please vote YES for an open United Methodist Church!
The problem with this line of reasoning (it's OK to split because there have been splits in the past) is that it can go on indefinitely. Just because one "breakaway sect" made sense doesn't mean that all such breaks are justified or necessary.
But in fact, it is probably the more orthodox evangelical sect that will have to break away from the denomination if this and other similar pro-homosexual measures pass. Look at the turmoil this issue has brought to the Anglican Church.
The first thing that comes to my mind is that Satan would like nothing better than to have Christians let down their values and stop following the bible teachings. The only church that would openly allow sin to take place without rebuke would be the church of Satan. Of course we are all sinners saved by the grace of God but we should in no manner allow godless teaching into the church and homosexuality is a sin. Again, love the person and hate the sinful act.
We should be referring to the bible about this issue. The church should not be transformed by the world by changing its point of view about homosexuality. It's written in the bible that it's a sin, period.(no argument). Time and again in the old testament the jews moved away from Gods teaching and God brought them back. In Judges it said everyone did what was right in their own mind instead of what God said was right. This should be a very clear cut issue to anyone who is a Christian.
Are we going to change the church? or should we be working on changing ourselves.... gays, alcoholics, philanders, thieves, or just the unclear minds? I don't think the church should require local pastors to accept everyone in membership. I think the church should be required to accept everyone so they can attend and get to know Jesus.... which it does. Hate the sin not the sinner is correct. The word hate makes people uncomfortable. Our message should be "Come struggle with us against your sin"
Not only was the early church a breakaway sect that was open to everyone, the early Protestant church was a breakaway sect that was more accessible to anyone. And the early Methodist church was a breakaway sect that was more open to everyone. If this doesn't pass, maybe we'll have to do another breakaway sect.
Of course being gay is not a greater sin than any other but a Christian should acknowledge and repent of their sins. For anyone to become a Methodist and not disavow the gay lifestyle would be against scripture. The Methodists should openly encourage gays to visit the church often in an attempt to guide them in the truth of the living bible and its teachings. The Methodists should not open membership up to anyone who's christian belief does not follow the bible's teaching.
Ah yes! "Sanctifying Grace" - what Wesley called a "scandal" both the Calvinists and Catholics alike - an eternal turning towards God and Christ and away from certain lifestyles - 1 Cor. 6: "such were some of you".
Last time I looked, the vows include a repentance of sin. I would hope that a congregation is strong enough to bring transforming grace to whosoever would seek to profess their faith in Christ.
Good legislation-- and particularly an amendment-- is specific, clear and unambiguous about its purpose. This amendment is intentionally vague and misleading as to its true purpose.
Instead, let us vote on a specific amendment to change church policy regarding homosexual practice. Wait-- that has been done many times, and such changes have been rejected repeatedly.
This is why the current amendment and discussion is couched in such intentionally ambiguous terms.
The reason the discussion over this amendment is dominated by conflicts over homosexuality (let us be specific) is because it is in that context that it has arisen.
It is disingenuous that those who want to force congregations to accept those unrepentantly living a lifestyle the congregation disagrees with... are presenting it in such vague and nice-sounding universal terms such as "hospitality" and "grace."
