Good old fashion arch rivals = 100 minutes @ 0-0 = Shootout Time! Hunter Haney had to many blocks to count, and added yet another shootout to his belt! Shea Leggot, Johnny Hippwell, Big Ron D, and Aaron Smith hammering down and putting in the work!

Defense played as strong as I've ever seen! Great job guys! You deserved to win!

Here's what James Parrish (North Platte Bulletin) - Had to say

The North Platte High School boys' soccer team outlasted Kearney in a shootout on Tuesday night under the lights at Bauer Field to upset the No. 6-ranked Bearcats, 1-0.

The Bulldogs had a lot to prove on Tuesday after losing 5-0 to Kearney at the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference tournament in Columbus just 10 days earlier.

"(Kearney) probably came in thinking they were going to do the same thing to us today but I readjusted my defense," NPHS coach Mary Elmshaeuser said. "My team did a really good job. I am really proud of our boys."

The game got off to a very late start after the North Platte-Kearney girls' game was delayed for over an hour due to lightning and in the first half, both teams played each other to a stalemate as the game was scoreless at halftime.

"They were motivated," said Elmshaeuser. "Kearney's our rival and the reason we are so motivated to play them is because they're so good. They're good from the forwards to their mids to their fullbacks to their goalie."

The game stayed scoreless for the entire second half and the game went into overtime. In the second ten minute overtime period, Kearney (9-2) started controlling the ball better and had several opportunities to score the winning goal. But the North Platte defense stayed strong and made it to a shootout where its goalie, Hunter Haney, was 4-0 in games decided by shootout.

Jordan Saldivar of Kearney got the first shot of the shootout and put it past Haney. But Shea Leggott beat Bearcat goalie Dillon Miller on the other end to even it up.

Josh Kolbo, Kearney's all-state forward, was next and Haney got a piece of the shot but it still went through. John Hipwell then answered by knocking in his shot.

Colton Harpst was next for Kearney and Haney anticipated that Harpst would shoot to his left. Harpst then went left and Haney was there for the stop. On the next shot, Ron Van Donk made it three for three to give NPHS (8-3) the advantage.

With the pressure on him, Matt Woodman made his shot to keep the Bearcats alive. But Aaron Smith followed with another make for the Dawgs to leave it all up to Zach Lind. Lind missed way right and Haney continued to remain perfect in shootouts as the Bulldogs defeated last year's state runner-up.

"I knew Hunter would focus and our shots still had to go in," Elmshaeuser said. "The one (shot by Kolbo) that Hunter hit was just a rocket and it's tough to stop those shots that are coming at you at 50 miles-per-hour. But he played great."
