Jan Garber began his career on America's bandstands as a modest quartet (including his own violin) following World War I. It later emerged as a 'hot band' in the 1920s; a 'sweet' band in the early 1930s through the early 1940s; a 'swing' band during World War II; and back to the 'sweet' style permanently in late 1945.

The conoisseurs of the "hot dance music" consider Jan Garber's 1920s style as belonging to the very best achievements of the dance music of the era. Andy Razaf's "Louisiana" is a perfect example of the possibilities of that band.
Recorded for Columbia, 1928

  • I love Jan Garber tunes! Thanks for posting this one! It's fun to hear how the Rhythm Boys influeneced other dance bands trios. I can almost sense them here in this hot dance tune. I played in a dance band once with a trombonist who was with the Garber band in New York in the 1960s. I was impressed!

  • One time I thought I was the only one who enjoyed this music from another age. But because of this modern thing called the internet and the great mind who thought of UTube. I find I am not alone.

  • En los años 28 la gran orquesta de Jan Garber nos hacía bailar alegremente desde Canadá hasta Algentina. Qué bella época. Maravilloso desempolvar estos recuerdos inolvidables. Saludos desde Bogotá Colombia

  • Malagasy sangany erantany eo @ jazz iazy io. Izao aho vao maheno ny hirany noho ny fisian'ny internet. Lovantsofina avy @ ray amamndreny no nahenoko ny tantarany.

  • ... so great, i still love it!

  • I think it was caused by the revolt against puritanical hogwash such as blaming Woman's Sufferage;-D

  • The 20's were great. Dope was legal and on every corner was a nightclub where there was booze, gambling, drugs, and prostitution under one roof. All thanks to Women's Suffrage.

  • great decade!!
