Get the script here: http://www.developphp.com/view.php?tid=1187

In this lesson you will get a free script example to copy and paste plus a video guide on the programming logic involved to accomplish checking a user's name in your sign up form using a simple Javascript Ajax post to PHP. The PHP will check our mySQL database to see if the username is already taken or not and lets the user know right away while they are filling out your sign up form.

  • 404 page not found ! where is the script ?

  • @rahulraina003 - link is now fixed... thanks for letting me know partner.

  • I would like to know, why are you using this bulky AJAX? Why aren't you using jQuery?

  • @tinklainis - I have to reply to this because you have the wrong idea about what is at work here. What you see here is what jQuery uses to allow people that don't know Javascript to Post variables to a server side script. So you have it massively wrong. This is very slim and the jQuery file is what is really bulky compared to this. jQuery is bulkier to use than this due to it having many things in it you will never use. People use jQuery so they don't have to learn Javascript well.

  • @tinklainis - So are you saying that jQuery does not use Ajax?

  • @tinklainis - go here and read - api.jquery.com/category/ajax/

  • Mine functions, but it won't recognize existing users. I built the database with a user_table, and id and user_name fields. I'm using a connection file generated by dreamweaver that works for everything else. All I changed was the path to the connection file and the path to itself (name_check_tutorial.php) in the javascript. No dice.

  • I have a question, I am creating a form where, I have certain people who are authorized to make a request on a certain application. I would like to know how i can use this particular script to my form.

Basically when they enter their name in the field and selected an application in the next drop down menu it should say that they are OK or authorized. How can i make this script work for me ??

  • awesome video!!!! the best on this topic again!! Nice work!!!

  • Hey, noticed u still r using procedural php on your tutorials n its fine if thats what works for u. I was wondering if you could do some OOP php tutorials plz? Thx man

  • All things aside, this is great work you do. Love your tutorials, and am looking forward to see more of them ;]

  • @flashbuilding at that time, I just wanted to know why :) now that you and 0syntrax0 explained, I can see the point of doing it the "longer way". I did not look up the AJAX methods used by jQuery at its source, but I assume, that they are more or less the same in their nature with the ones you wrote.

My comment is, that i never needed to learn AJAX directly - I went straight for jQuery's methods. I think of jQuery as a tool, that helps us save some time in writing our code

  • @0syntrax0 thank you, didn't think of if that way before
