Iarla Ó Lionáird, lead singer for Afro-Celt Sound System, sings "Aisling Gheal" (Bright Vision). A haunting song, in the sean nós tradition (old style) of Irish Gaelic folksong, from Ó Lionáird's 1997 album with Womad, "The Seven Steps to Mercy." The song was recorded when Ó Lionáird was 14 years old.

And then I saw her / My vision-woman / Hair abundant / And flowing about / Falling starlike / Touching the dewdrops / Stepping lightly / Brushing the heath / Upon her chest / Her breasts / Perfection / Her face a rose hip / Her neck a swan

  • Irland is so far away yet I feel I could touch the her heart as she does to me.This is fine song.gsb

  • @canadianceltic Agreed. Heartfelt, beautiful.

  • This guy and another guy from Afro Celt did a set on the KCRW show Morning Becomes Eclectic years ago. You can listen to it at their website. It's often just him and a drum. The music is so stripped down and it's incredible. Do yourself a favor and look it up.

  • @ar4216 Thanks. I'll check it out. I like Afro Celt, too. This a cappella song moves me, tho.

  • If you want to listen to a greek song (from crete) that resembles this sean nos song, copy-paste "Δόμνα Σαμίου Για ιδές περβόλιν έμορφο" (behold a beautiful orchard).

Similar a capella singing. Tradition of high quality.

  • @perfectionitht Thank you! There are also beautiful Bulgarian folksongs (Voix Bulgares series of recordings).

  • @Japeter2000 ναίιιι (yeahhh), les Voix Bulgares are well known in Greece (couldn't be otherwise, due to our common traditions)! thank you very much for bringing them up!!

  • @Ashmara2 This is my favorite cut on the album. Ethereal, beautiful.

  • Been trying to get my hands on this recording for ages - amazing.
