Newborn elephant at San Diego Safari Park

Baby elephant born the morning of 27 December at San Diego Zoo Safari Park (Wild Animal Park). This video was taken when he was about 12 hours old, still trying to figure out how to stand up and nurse. He's in an enclosure with his mother and older brother (who was recently weaned). The newborn's father is just on the other side of the fence along with an aunt and six month old cousin.

Why are people so stupid laughing when Mother is trying to help her child up to

nurse... then making so much noise and clapping Why can't people be quiet and

enjoy the Mother and her calf. You would think zoo staff would have some brains

to understand that animals love peace and quiet. Too bad that the human brain

has a missing link or two.

That is one clever, yet calm mother. Just a small, careful nudging at the appropriate angle, every now and then, but allowing the baby to use and exercise its clumsy leg muscles, to try to get up on its own first... Having a baby before and successfully raising him shows, when it comes to dealing with this present small tiny one.
