@atsf3780 like you had said before, it's a pilot. It was called a cowcatcher or cattlecatcher in some areas because that happened often but it is meant for deflecting anything that could possibly derail the locomotive. They all still have them today they're just designed differently.
@cubeproduktion yeah it actually was originally used to shove cows off the tracks way back when..by the time of the J1e the problem lessened and im guess its the reason the cowcatcher gradually got smaller
