Tale Of Ekati is my moms friends horse.. she works with him and i hopefully get to ride him :D Good race though. Tale OF Ekati also ran in THe Kentuky Derby
in the futurity and wood, tale of ekati was able to get a decent position early and rode like a well tuned caddy. his prob is that he doesn't break sharp straight away from the gate and that could really foul up his chances when there will be 18 runners outside of him looking to put a wall up in front of him. If he breaks sharp(top5) he has a shot, otherwise he won't have much of a chance.
22.2 is insane fast. I think WellConditioned is correct in saying he was spent at the top of the third turn. I also think he probably didn't have to stalk the leader like he did. Riding 5-6th at the top of the back stretch and at a less grueling pace would have resulted in a stronger finish.
This was the weakest Derby prep race so far this year. I don't think any of these horses have much of a chance in the Derby. War Pass can't get the distance. Tale of Ekati basically inherited this race and still had to work for it even after War Pas collasped in the stretch. And Court Vision had a rabbit doing the dirty work for him on the front end and still couldn't get the job done and was struggling home at the end. As far as I'm concerned all three of these are throwouts for the Derby.
Looked to me like 'just before the top of the stretch' was the FIRST time he switched leads. Ran on his left the whole way, even through the back stretch.
Actually he was on his proper leads until just before the top of the stretch when he switched to the left lead, resulting in the bearing out. The reason he did this is that he was very tired - understandably so as he ran a wicked first quarter (22:2) over a tiring, drying track. He raced a lot better than most think, but he still has no chance in the big one - he'll never get 1-1/4 miles.
I know what you mean about the mind of their own! I went back and watched the TBD again. He was on the that outside lead again throughout the final turn and was looking like a wheel was about to come off through the stretch. Same thing in the Wood with the leads, although he looked 'better', still seems to me he has something going on with his left hind. He must vet out ok to run so I give up.
