WFPF Affiliate, Desmund 'iceucold' Mitchell-
http://wfpfsocial.com/members/profile/8199
Desmund is a 24 year old Parkour practitioner that
resides in the Houston area. The former leader and co-creator of
Houston Parkour has been training the art of movement since November
2007. Desmund's background boasts a wide variety of sports and
activities including tennis, track and field, bodybuilding, and
aerobics. Inspired by a video of Cyril Raffieli, Desmund has been
passionate about parkour as well as the philosophy behind the movement
since he began. "Parkour teaches you things about yourself that most
people take for granted. When people see the Youtube videos they see
the things we do and think it's impressive, but they don't understand
how much time and effort was put behind every single movement. It
takes a lot of passion for personal development, both mentally and
physically, to do some of the things you see." Through diligent work,
Desmund along with others in the Houston area have helped bring the
spirit of parkour from across the pond to our backyard. In the few
years he's been training Desmund has assisted the community to blossom
from five traceurs, to a diverse group of about twenty-five men,
women, and children. He has worked closely with various communities
throughout Texas to educate the public about parkour. Desmund is
currently a member of Humanzee Parkour Ministries (a not for profit
evangelical ministry based out of Austin, Tx), Team Traverse (an
affiliate team of the WFPF), and remains an avid member of the Houston
parkour community. Desmund recently participated in a performance for
the NCAA's Final Four. This performance, brought to Houston by the WFPF
& sponsored by AT&T is the longest and largest live parkour show of it's
kind. When not doing parkour, Desmund is a full time security guard and an avid chess player, as well as pursuing an undergraduate degree in the field of computer
science with a minor concentration in technical writing. With such a
full load, Desmund still manages to travel across Texas several times
a year to assist with teaching a workshop or participate in a mass
gathering of parkour practitioners. "I think it's of the utmost
importance to travel when training parkour. Going to a different city
and training with new people is often mentally refreshing as well as
an educational experience. For us, traveling is a way of exchanging
techniques, experiences, and making new friends. What people don't
often see is how tight-knit we all are. We're just one big family that
sees the world as a playground." You can meet up with Desmund and the
rest of the Houston Parkour scene every Saturday morning at 10:30 at
Tranquility Park in downtown Houston. "The only requirements are good
spirits and a decent pair of trainers. If you've got the former, you
won't really need the latter as much." For more info on Houston
Parkour, check out the Houston Parkour Facebook page, and don't forget
to try and keep up with Desmund and Team Traverse on WFPF.com
