I use the same display shield that drives a bi-color 8x8 LED matrix (see my WiseClock video) to make a 16x8 pixel single-color display. Some changes are required in the sketch as well, but the conclusion is that a single shield can now be used (with some wiring "adaptations") for two kinds of displays.     I make my own Arduino compatible, called Wiseduino (google it). It has onboard RTC and EEPROM and it is hardware compatible with Arduino 2009 and UNO.
