it is a technique called throwing off the hump. Having a large "hump" of clay cuts down on start over time if you were to throw directly on the wheelhead. hope that answers your question.

why does he keep a bunch of clay at the bottom? could someone please let me know? I've never seen anyone do it like that before.

I like to see that clay changes into it's shape.
It looks wonderful to see and beautiful how the designer of clay shapes it.

WOW - what a treat for me. The perfect english gentleman - they dont make them like that anymore. I would love to see him throwing/making a jug. His jugs are truly beautiful.
