Based on eight photographic portraits of different faces, this experiment in visual perception consists of 35,992 synthetically generated intermediate images, which are the raw material of this "timebased portrait." The portrait gradually changes in the course of 24 minutes, denying the viewer the familiar possibilities of identifying and memorizing individual human features. The interplay of highly precise images and the radical slowness of the transformation process confronts the viewer with seemingly still images and a hardly perceptible changing physiognomy of the depicted faces.
INSTANT deprives the audience of the well acquainted possibilities of identification, determination and memorizing of individual human characteristics. Identities are appearing solely as instant moments. They are transient, flowing and inaccessible. By this means INSTANT is questioning a fundamental principle of human interaction and the reliability of visual information.

Basado en retratos fotográficos de ocho caras distintas, este experimento de percepción visual se forma a través de 35992 imágenes intermedias generadas sintéticamente que originan un único retrato que va cambiando imperceptiblemente durante veinticuatro minutos, lo que impide al espectador la identificación o la memorización del individuo humano.

Acht hochauflösende Digitalphotographien von markanten Gesichtern liefern das Ausgangsmaterial für das Wahrnehmungsexperiment „INSTANT": Über eine Dauer von 24 Minuten wird anhand von 35992 Zwischenbildern ein zeitbasiertes Portrait generiert, das dem Betrachter vertraute Möglichkeiten der Identifikation, Festlegung und Erinnerung persönlichkeitsbestimmender Merkmale entzieht. Identitäten erscheinen so lediglich als Augenblicke. Sie sind flüchtige, fließende und stets unverfügbare Momente. Auf diese Weise stellt "INSTANT" ein grundlegendes Prinzip zwischenmenschlicher Interaktion in Frage. Das Zusammenspiel von hochauflösender Bildtechnik und radikal entschleunigter Transformation der Einzelportraits ermöglicht eine Irritation des Betrachters, der gleichzeitig mit einer scheinbar unbewegten Darstellung und einer sich merkbar verändernden Physiognomie konfrontiert wird.
