Atash (Thirst) (Israel/Palestine) is not only an extremely powerful and award winning debut from filmmaker Tawfik Abu Wael (winner of the International Critics Award at the Cannes Film Festival 2004, amongst others). It's also an important groundbreaking collaboration between a Palestinian writer/director and an Israeli producer (Avi Kleinberger), financiers and crew - the first of its kind. The film touches upon political issues in a unique and subtle manner, and deliberately rejects taking advantage of the current political conflict, but instead allows it to dwell in the background.
