See how I stopped Japanese beetles from eating my plants using drain pipe and trap. Some say it attracts more beetles, I didn't find this but eliminated most of them. Getting the trap high in the air was my innovation that worked.

  • Everyone lives in an area. I live in a small city. If I can attract them out of my neighbor's yards into the traps, then next time there's less and less to deal with, it's not enough to only remove them from my property.

  • In the U.S. any hardware or gardening store: Japanese beetle trap.

  • Here we are July 17, 2010, I've seen 2 beetles in the yard, evidently they're missing in action in my county also. To the last comment, yeah, they live in Tennessee!

  • We're now through the 2009 season and no beetles this year. Could be the excessive rain we've had in Pennsylvania.

  • Last year there were thousands of beetles. I don't know if I pulled them from my neighbor's yard, but in any case, this year there are virtually no beetles. I don't know if I nailed them or if they go in cycles like cicadas. I guess we'll see next year. Yeah, they love that hormone bait, wherever it is, they're going to go!

  • I'm unsure to use one of these, I believe there was a study that this invites more to the area than if you never had one.

I'm testing neem oil right now. Not had has many but time will tell

  • Good idea. Where do you get the yellow bate things.

  • @tonyfixit Well, if you can watch a beetle and see if he can cling tot he sides of the wall of the PVC pipe and walk up it without falling off, you don't need the funnel. My guess is, probably not. At least not 10ft worth. I suppose they could also fly up, but not likely 10 ft vertical. Seems like you could put a bucket of water at the bottom that they would fall into and drown.

  • omg, when i saw how many bugs there were. i kinda freaked out a little. i know this is a stupid question but...do japanese beetles live in tennessee or is it just japan?? those things are huge

  • We use the milky spore to kill the beetles. It spreads over about 3 years and gradually kills them. The only problem is waiting, but eventually it'll spread.

  • In the U.S. Northeast, the beetles are on a two year cycle.. those laying this year will emerge in 2010. In southern climates, the gestation is complete in a year, so it's different. No matter where they come from (neighbors or not), we are reducing their numbers by trapping/recycling.
