Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1787)

La clemenza di Tito (1752)
Dramma per musica in 3 acts

Libretto: Pietro Metastasio

Tito's aria (Act I)

Del più sublime soglio
l'unico frutto è questo:
tutto è tormento il resto,
e tutto è servitù.

Che avrei, se ancor perdessi
le sole ore felici
che ho nel giovar gli oppressi,
nel sollevar gli amici,
nel dispensar tesori
al merto e alla virtù?

Conductor: Jean-Claude Malgoire
La Grande Écurie et la Chambre du Roy

Live recording (1991)

  • On my way to the gym this morning, KUSC was playing the Bach Magnificat and the tenor was marvelous. It was Howard Crook, a tenor new to me. Very elegant. Since he was born i 1947, it's certainly taken me a long time to "discover" him.
