I'm hoping some top players will see this video and take it upon themselves to post a more refined example. As for now, this is what you've got:

1st two bars of the drum salute "Highlanders at the Shop" by Carl W. Baggett, Jr.

My left hand on the drag sequence is a little loud. Also the Swiss ruffs are a little loud. It helps to point the sticks at the head for quiet notes and "scoop" them out (a Scott Armit technique) for accents (or natural accents, such as an end of a phrase).

Also, around the 2:00 minute mark, I play the 1st bar with the subdivided beats a little sloppy. I'm partially dot-cutting the note after the 1st accent which creats a kind of quarter or half swing. THIS IS WRONG! It should be played straight through. I get it more or less right at the end!

Basically the whole phrase should flow.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm a run of the mill, competitive pipe band drummer. But it's in the ball park for what this phrase should sound like.

I implore you to check out master players and instructors like Gordon Bell, Tom Foote, etc. Here's Tom demonstrating the "Drag, Single Stroke of 5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNsxW47jGk0

  • Hi Carl- I sent a PM to you on Dunsire (I think it's you). Anyway I knew I'd butcher the whole salute, so I just played a few phrases for people who didn't know the idiom. Hopefully people who are interested in Scottish drumming will go to deeper sources! Can't wait to hear the entire salute, brother!

  • Hi Doug:) This is Carl W Baggett Jr AKA Big C (No, really. I'm not joking!). I'm so flattered that you are teaching my little ditty. I cannot adequately express my gratitude...so humbled. Just a quick heads up--if you play this in a dot-cut fashion then you performed the bars perfectly. However, I meant the piece to played round. That should make some of the other junk in the trunk more sensible. I'll try to get a recording of this soon... Again, thanks my drumming brother:)
